Debrecen Summer School

Puskás and the “Magical Magyars:”
Hungary and the “Danube School” in Global Football
17–30 July, 2011
60 lessons, 6 ECTS credits*

Course Description:
One of the most widely recognized areas of 20th-century Hungarian culture is certainly Hungarian sport, which has reached international standards in several branches such as water polo, swimming, fencing, boxing and, naturally, (European) football. This brand new course has been designed for sportsmen, sports fans and physical-education teachers all over the world who are interested in learning about the unparalleled achievements of the legendary Hungarian football players of the 1950s, most frequently associated with the name of  Ferenc Puskás. By placing this unique phenomenon in the historical context of the Cold War period and combining lecture-hall presentations with practicing special Hungarian techniques, the course offers a special opportunity to study the heritage and influence of Hungarian football on the international scene. The course, including at least twenty hours of learning and practising ball games, will provide a great opportunity for other students of the traditional Debrecen Summer School to participate in unique championships.

Major Topics:
The history of Hungarian sport and Hungarian football; the story of the 110-year-old Hungarian Football League; the myth and reality of the Hungarian “Golden Team”; major matches of the 20th century; the life and heritage of Ferenc Puskás; sport and politics in the 1950s and after; Hungarian specialities: football tennis, “button football”, heading a ball in water.
